First of all, do you know what the word « primeur » means?
In the world of wine, the term “primeur” is used for two different systems: the sale in primeurs and primeur wine (also known as « vin nouveau »). The latter requires quick consumption, such as with beaujolais nouveau.
However, it should not be confused with the sale in primeurs. This means buying wine from Châteaux or estates even before it is bottled. At the time of purchase, the wine is still in barrels.

The primeurs tasting is a unique event in Bordeaux, taking place every year in April and lasting a week. Professionals and wine critics come from all over the world to taste the latest harvest and provide their feedback. Trends for the vintage and the market are then presented.
Starting in May, individuals can order wine in primeurs. But patience is required, as it can only be collected two years later, after bottling.
Buying in primeurs allows purchasers to obtain wines at more attractive prices and sometimes access rarer and more sought-after wines on the market. Moreover, this system is also beneficial for the owners, as it ensures cash flow before the harvest.
It’s a system that is equally profitable for professionals and individuals.
The origin of primeurs
The practice of selling in primeurs dates back to the 18th century and has been open to the public since the 1980s. This sale originated in Bordeaux but is gradually expanding to other regions such as Burgundy and the Rhône Valley.
It was notably thanks to Baron Philippe de Rothschild that the sale in primeurs was established following a tasting of his vintage still aging in barrels. This tasting was a great success, and since then, the tradition has developed and continues to be one of the most anticipated moments for wine enthusiasts.
Good reasons to buy in primeur
In summary, primeurs allow you to:
- Obtain more attractive prices than when the wines are bottled and sold a few months later.
- Expand your cellar (if you have one).
- Ensure stocks for significant years or highly sought-after great vintages.
- Receive (upon request) the wines in their original wooden cases.
- Support winemakers and help them in their development.
Primeur at Château d’Eyran
Château d’Eyran red vintage 2022, according to Charles Savigneux, winemaker and manager of the estate:

« The frost in early April 2022 (where temperatures dropped to -8 degrees) caused little damage as the buds had barely begun to burst. The year was marked by high temperatures and a record number of days exceeding 30°C. The vines suffered neither from heat nor drought, thanks to good rainfalls in July and August. The harvest, early and at optimal maturity, was impacted in quantity due to the small grapes harvested. The wines are colored, rich, and powerful. It’s a great vintage »
