Spring in the vines: between tradition and renewal

  • 22/04/2024
Bourgeon de vigne

Spring (March 20 to June 20), a season of rebirth and renewal, brings a special magic to the vineyards.

It’s a time when nature gently awakens from its winter slumber, but it’s also when the hard work of the vintner reaches its peak, meticulously preparing the land for a new harvest season. Spring is much more than a mere seasonal transition; it’s a true symphony where tradition and innovation blend, providing the vines with a fertile environment to express their full potential.

The awakening of the vineyard

One of the first tasks of the vintner in winter is pruning the vines. This ancient practice is crucial for shaping plant growth and ensuring a quality harvest. With a pair of pruning shears, the vintner tackles the dormant branches, carefully choosing which buds to keep and which to remove. It’s a meticulous job that requires both expertise and patience, as each cut shapes the destiny of the future harvest.

Following this, in spring, the vine awakens from its winter dormancy. The first signs of this renewal are the budding of new shoots. This is a significant moment for vintners, as these buds signal the future grape clusters. Each bud is a promise of potential, bearing the fruits that will be harvested months later.

Soil maintenance

In spring, attention must also be given to fertilization and soil maintenance. After the rigors of winter, the earth needs a boost to regain its vitality and fertility. The vintner can apply natural fertilizers, such as compost or manure, to nourish the vines and promote their growth. They may also till the rows of vines to aerate the soil, enhancing water and nutrient circulation while reducing competition from unwanted weeds. At Château d’Eyran, we take this opportunity to enrich our inter-rows with seeds (vegetables, grains, plants, flowers, etc.). The vineyard transforms into a verdant landscape, a true festival of colors and biodiversity.

This is hard but essential work that ensures the long-term health of our land and ecosystem.

L’entretien de la vigne

April

As spring progresses, the crucial steps in vine maintenance intensify. First, bending takes place, where the trimmed canes are carefully tied to a horizontal wire. This technique helps control the growth of the vine and better distribute the future clusters, ensuring an optimal harvest.

May

At this time, bud thinning often begins, an essential operation in which unwanted shoots, known as « water sprouts, » are removed. This step aims to maintain a perfect balance between foliage and grapes, avoiding competition and optimizing the quality of the harvest. It’s also during this period that we can observe the development of the buds selected during pruning.

June

In this final month of spring, attention shifts more toward training the vines. This practice involves guiding the canes upward by attaching them to wires, ensuring controlled vertical growth. Of course, this height must be closely monitored to guarantee optimal vine development and maximize sun exposure for the clusters. Canopy management is then carried out to control leaf density. Additionally, careful leaf removal often complements this work, involving the removal of leaves near the clusters. This action promotes grape ripening by allowing better sun exposure and reduces disease risks by improving air circulation.

And then, summer arrives…

Constant vigilance

Spring also brings its share of challenges for the vintner, particularly regarding vine health and sometimes unpredictable weather variations. The milder temperatures and increased humidity create an environment conducive to the proliferation of fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew.

These variations can also manifest as frost events or particularly destructive hailstorms, which can severely impact crops at such a fragile stage.

To protect the grape varieties, it is essential to remain vigilant, available, and to implement management strategies along with constant monitoring of the plants’ health.

The birth of the first clusters

But spring is also, above all, the time when the first signs of the future harvest begin to emerge. The buds slowly transform into young shoots, which in turn will give rise to the first grape clusters.

In conclusion, the vineyard becomes a true laboratory where tradition and innovation come together. It is the moment when the vintner applies all their expertise to prepare the land for a new harvest year. It’s a demanding yet exciting job, where every action matters.
